Trip Reports

Blanca Peak Trip
Date: Aug 15th - 16th, 2009
Trip Leader: Mike Borum
Members Present: Rob Cooper, Russ Rose, Mac (BadRock) McClung
Guests Present: Stephanie McClung, Levi, Zach
Picture Link: Russ's Pics  Mike's Pics  Rob's Pics
Description: Mac has a shiny new rig...well, it's his old rig but it works like a new rig. Except when it decides to spew power steering fluid on the way down. Mack says he can skip working his arms in the gym tomorrow, because he worked them hard getting his "Armstrong-powered" Jeep down the trail. But he did get reacquainted with his onboard welder (not working on his own rig, though).

Stephanie likes to climb trees and hike mountains, likes to create gastronomical masterpieces at the campsite, likes to build campfires, likes to drink beer by the campfire, likes to drive Mac's Jeep. Oh, and I think she liked Zach following her around all weekend.

Levi is not liking much. He's been under the weather since breakfast, he tosses his cookies in the middle of the night and feels a little better, but Mac says, "he's not running on all 8 cylinders". Levi struggles all weekend but keeps his chin up, even though he forgot to bring a jacket.

Russ worked really hard to make sure that if he flopped his Sami on Jaws II, he'd have a brand-new roll cage protecting him. Problems, though. His new coil-over shock setup is breaking left and right. Mac welds up the left one, then Russ breaks the right one on Jaws I. Jaws II is safe till next year. At least there was enough room between the rest of us to haul Russ and his gear to the top and back. And he had a 4x4 block of wood just lying around in the rig that we used to keep the axle from tagging the fender while he limped back to the tow rigs.

Rob likes to rough it during his camping trips. Plenty of cold beer, steak kabobs on the grill, and Safeway mini-subs for lunch, it's a tough life. Can't even get the TJ to give him any problems. These obstacles called Jaws I through IV are easy pickings for his comp-cut cruiser. Well, he did complain about the cold night in his tent...were you wishing Kelly was in there with you, big fella?

Zach has one thing on his mind on this trip: "When can I go fishing?" I am sure he had a fishing pole in his hands the entire time we were by the lake. He's discovered that the artificial flies worked best. Oh, and Zach loves Ms Stephanie. He climbs up the tree with her (tree sap on his shirt), he follows her around the lake ("falls" in the lake; wet, muddy shoes and socks); he follows her up the hiking trail to the lakes above the waterfall, he even tries to follow her into the woods..."Zach! Let her go by herself. Geez!

Mike leads the perfect trip, takes all the perfect lines over all of the obstacles all the way to the lake, just so the rest of the drivers don't have to worry about winching or tow straps...what a guy! He makes a perfect hotdog for Zach at dinner time; keeps the weather from turning bad...basically everything a trip leader should do.
